Are you a DC fan or a Marvel fan? While most superheroes are American in origin. You’d be surprised by the fact that Indonesia has its own superhero. Shocking right? Allow me to introduce you to Indonesia’s very own, Gundala Putra Petir, who was extremely popular in his era. Perhaps his name might not sound familiar to millennials, but in the ’80s, he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Superman and Batman. This lighting wielding superhero’s story was first told in a famous fantasy comic created by Hasmi Suraminata in 1969. Because of its enduring popularity, this comic has been adapted into a serial-movie in 1981. And now, three decades later, the movie is being remade by director Joko Anwar. “Gundar” is said to play in cinemas mid-2019 starring Abimana Aryasatya. For those of you who aren’t familiar with his mightiness, here are two shocking facts about Gundar: 1. His Superpower Despite what people might think, Gundala Putri Petir was not inspired by The...

Super//Human: Mirror Images

At first glance, comic book superheroes always seem so larger-than life; after all, they’re “stronger than a locomotive, faster than a speeding bullet, and able leap tall buildings in a single bound!” Most people are normal by definition, and so most people can’t relate to billionaires in costumes, Norse gods and intergalactic refugees. Those aren’t exactly the kind of people you run into when hanging out on a Saturday night, or come to think of it; anywhere, ever. (If they are, you’re either at a fan convention or in need of professional help, like a therapist.) But because of their inherent absurdity, what might not be obvious is the fact that like any other form of media, even the most outlandish superhero stories have people, (relatively) normal ones as writers and editors, and like their more down-to-earth colleagues who write conventional stories, these people often write what they know; life experiences and personal beliefs and apply it to their stories. A...

Dude, where is my superhero?

We all love superheroes. From the friendly neighbor "Spiderman" to ever-so-angry "Hulk", our admiration for superheroes has not failed to dissipate since the creation of superheroes. Maybe it is a human nature to always long for an omnipotent and omniscient figure that can help us when are in need. Maybe that's why we invest so much of our time and energy into fictional superhero characters as an attempt to bring our wildest dreams into reality. But as you can see, superheroes are just mere reflections of human imagination, it is human creation that does not exist in reality. Though, I have enjoyed most of the superhero movies that have come out during my life time. When I was a kid, I fantasized over the idea of becoming a superhero myself. I think we all have dreamt of having some sort of super power and becoming a superhero to save our world. You know what? Maybe some of us still do. No matter how old you are, no matter where you come from, no matter who y...

Lets talk about real-life superheroes

Superheroes? Fictional characters that possess supernatural powers that everybody idolizes…and when I say ‘everybody’ I mean kids, teenagers, and adults. Many people, when they think of superheroes, they instantly think of the comic books, movie characters such as Batman, Spiderman, Superman, captain America etc…but wait a minute aren’t firefighters, policemen, doctors our real-life superheroes that we should all exalt and admire?  I mean these real-life superheroes are ordinary people in their everyday lives with hobbies and personalities just like the fictional superheroes, they both fight for the safety of others and return to their regular lifestyles.  This is not to say that superheroes are bad, but I believe the idolatry of superheroes can mess with the population's misconceptions of heroes causing us, the people, to overlook those among us. If you were to ask me who my favorite fictional superhero is, my answer would probably shock you, but I do not have...
