Lets talk about real-life superheroes

Superheroes? Fictional characters that possess supernatural powers that everybody idolizes…and when I say ‘everybody’ I mean kids, teenagers, and adults. Many people, when they think of superheroes, they instantly think of the comic books, movie characters such as Batman, Spiderman, Superman, captain America etc…but wait a minute aren’t firefighters, policemen, doctors our real-life superheroes that we should all exalt and admire?  I mean these real-life superheroes are ordinary people in their everyday lives with hobbies and personalities just like the fictional superheroes, they both fight for the safety of others and return to their regular lifestyles. This is not to say that superheroes are bad, but I believe the idolatry of superheroes can mess with the population's misconceptions of heroes causing us, the people, to overlook those among us.

If you were to ask me who my favorite fictional superhero is, my answer would probably shock you, but I do not have a superhero… wait what? Yes, I was never a fan of superheroes growing up, nevertheless I associate fictional superheroes ideology with my favorite real-life superhero: my dad. Just like firefighters, my dad strives to use his 'supernatural powers' to fight for my safety and expects nothing in return. My superhero is just an ordinary man that works 2 jobs to provide for his family… Well how does that make him a superhero?

Let’s look back at the definition of “Superheroes” - a fictional character having extraordinary or superhuman powers with exceptional skills in what he does. Real-life superheroes cannot fly like Spiderman, but they can definetely use their not-so-super powers to protect us from the danger. Working 2 jobs does not make any one a superhero, but it is their ambition, determination, and the heart they put into the work they do. My superhero puts everything into his work to achieve the best he can and to be an example of a person. I mean lets be honest here isn't this what fictional superheroes characters does to us? It makes us fantasize about being a superhero just like them because of their passion in their work/mission. Well thats the feeling I get when 'watching' my real-life superhero work, I imagine myself getting a job and becoming just like my superhero.

One of the things that we learn from watching superhero movies is that everybody has their own unique characteristics that somehow becomes something extraordinary and heroic. There will always be a person that will admire the character you play, fiction movies helps us imagine surreal events? Yes! But our real-life superheroes brings us back to reality and allows us to build our own characters.
